About
One developer. 19 years. No middlemen.
I'm Tom, a freelance web developer based in Newark, Nottinghamshire. I build fast, accessible, sustainable websites for businesses across the UK, and I'm the person you'll deal with from first conversation to long after launch.
My story
I've been building for the web since 2007
I found my love of web development in Sixth Form around 2007, when I started building websites back in the days when a "mobile-friendly" site meant a separate one at m.something.com. I've been at it ever since, and I still enjoy it, which I'm told is unusual after 19 years.
In that time I've built for brands, agencies, startups and local businesses, and I've watched the web go from a few hundred kilobytes a page to several megabytes of things nobody asked for. Most of the problems I'm called in to fix come from the same place: too many layers between the person who understands the business and the person who writes the code.
So I work as The Lone Developer. One person, doing the work himself, with trusted specialists for branding, copywriting and SEO brought in only when a project needs them, and always introduced to you up front.

How I work
Small, direct and dependable
direct
You talk to the person writing the code
No account managers, no project managers, no junior picking up your brief. If you email me, I read it. If you ask a question, I answer it.
plain
Straight answers, in plain English
I'll explain what I'm recommending and why, and I'll tell you when you don't need something. Sometimes the right answer is a simple site, not a bigger build.
lean
Fast and small by default
I pick the right tool for the job and keep the page weight down. Faster sites rank better, convert better and use less energy.
inclusive
Accessible from the first line
Accessibility is built in from the start, not bolted on at the end. It's better for your visitors, and for your business.
What working together looks like
No surprises
Every project is different, but they all follow roughly the same shape.
A conversation
You tell me what you're trying to achieve. I ask questions, then come back within two working days with an honest view and a clear quote. No pressure, no jargon.
Plan and build
I work from your designs or from a designer I can bring in, and keep you updated as it comes together. You see real progress, not a big reveal at the end.
Launch and handover
I test on real devices, check performance and accessibility, then launch. You get a proper handover, so you know how to look after your site.
Still here afterwards
Take the reins yourself, or let me look after updates, security and hosting. Either way, you know who to call.
What I stand for
Good for your visitors, your data and the planet
Your data stays in the UK
UK data residency is a stated value here, not a footnote. My hosting runs from a London data centre, and nothing is silently routed through European or US infrastructure. Your site, your customers' data and your backups stay in the UK, under UK law and UK GDPR.
A lighter web
Every kilobyte has a carbon cost. I build lean sites, choose hosting with power matched 100% to renewable energy, and avoid the bloat that makes pages slow and wasteful.
Open to everyone
A site people can't use is a site that doesn't work. I build to accessibility standards as a matter of course, so your site works for people using screen readers, keyboards and slow connections, as well as everyone else.
Who I work with
Startups, local businesses and agencies
My clients range from local barbers and theatres to recruitment firms and psychology practices. What they share is a wish for a website that works properly and a developer who picks up the phone.
I'm based in the East Midlands and work remotely with clients across the UK. Most projects are run entirely online, though I'm always happy to jump on a call.
What I build with
The right tool for the job
I choose the technology once I understand the project, not before. A brochure site doesn't need a heavyweight framework, and a custom web app doesn't belong on a page builder.
Let's talk about your project
Tell me what you're building and I'll come back within two working days for a straightforward conversation about your ideas.
